R-67 was the proposal to approve triple damages against insurance companies that deny legitimate claims. The debate was very much heated and the insurance industry spent an undisclosed amount in T.V. commercial to repeal the proposal.
Insurance companies argued that there were already laws that protect the consumer against denial of legitimate claims, and that the effect of this proposal, if approved was that they would have to raise every one premium to cover all those ludicrous lawsuits.
The argument is more than flawed. Insurance companies reported $44 Billon (yeah with B not an M) during the Katrina Hurricanes. The insurance industry continues to report record profits every year. So why is that they have to shift the burden to the customer? Because they are worry about their own stock holders, that is about it.

However, if every state passes legislation like this one, insurance companies will be way more careful about denying claims.
Consumers in Washington defeated the insurance company. I think that is one step closer to put insurance companies in their place.
