Cancellation of policy | Grace period after loss?

by S Warren
(Jacksonville,FL)

When insurance is canceled in seven days of a claim can a claim be filed and take effect?

Answer:

It depends on your local jurisdiction and the terms of your policy.

Some states require that the insurance company give you 30 days notice before cancellation. If they gave you notice, then the policy expired and the loss occurred after that cancellation date, then you may not have coverage. Again, it depends on what your states allows. Contact a local attorney that can help you with that.

Also, it may be helpful to look at the actual policy and/or its terms. They may have a grace period for "non payment" and other provisions. This may or may not be your case, but it's worth looking at.
