Claim assignment | What does it mean

by Ron Wardell
(Bend, Oregon)

Does assignment of a claim # indicate acknowledgment of responsibility; or is it just an activity tracking # ?

Answer:

We don't believe it means neither. Assignment means that the Assignor gives the rights of the policy to the assignee. The person that is supposed to be paid (the insurance company here) is giving that right to someone else.

This is of course our brief understanding, but you do want to contact a lawyer in your jurisdiction to tell you about this.

In the insurance world, this could also mean that the insurance company is simply changing adjusters (the claim is being reassigned to adjuster XX).

I hope this helps.

Good Luck,
