Parking lot accident | Damages worth reporting?

My son who is 16 had an accident with a parked car in a parked car with no one in it. He backed into the car and caused some damage to the driver side of the car. Since no one was in the car and it was not moving it was obviously his fault.

He went into the church where the accident took place and found the owner. It appears the damage could be between 1500 and 2000 dollars.

We swapped info and the owner agreed to get a couple of estimates for the damage. Since my sons insurance is so high to begin with am I better to file the claim or pay for the repairs myself.

Answer:

Hello,

Well, it’s probably best to wait and see what the estimates do. If they are high or you think they are making you fix damages you did not cause, then you would want your insurance company to handle this.
Also, if the other party is not reasonable, then you want your adjuster to handle this.

However, as you outlined, this could raise your insurance for a long time, so wait and see how much the damages will cost you and make that decision then.

As always, it is very important that you talk with a local attorney!
Good Luck,
